How did you get started as a wrench?
“One day I was at the bike shop waiting on a repair, saw a help wanted sign, and wanted a change from the restaurant and bar business. I did shipping, receiving, etc. for a while. They saw me work on my own bike and ask questions and learn about bikes. One day they said, ‘you are a mechanic now’.”

What’s your favorite hack that anyone can do for their bike?
“Wipe the chain off with a dry rag after every ride.”

What is something a rider should carry in their saddle bag but maybe haven’t thought of?
“Shop rag.”

What is your spirit animal?
“Bigfoot.”

What do you love about bikes?
“The freedom, the quiet, and the change in perspective.”

How did you get started as a wrench?
“I got started as a wrench when I lost my job at a one-hour photo processing business I worked at in high school. A family friend owned a local shop and offered me a job sweeping. It didn’t take long to settle in and find I enjoyed the mechanical aspect of the job.”

What’s your favorite hack that anyone can do for their bike?
“My favorite hack that anyone can do for their bike is to lube the @$#* chain, and inflate the tires.”

What is something a rider should carry in their saddle bag but maybe haven’t thought of?
Personally I always carry a full bike stand and toolbox in my saddle-bag, but if that’s not an option I’d recommend a pair of nitrile gloves and a scrap of terry cloth. Gloves for having to mess with your chain and not get filthy, and terry cloth to have something to check for the source of flats; the small fibers will grab even tiny bits of wire or thorns your hands might miss.

What is your spirit animal?
“My spirit animal is a platypus because they’re awesome, and so am I.”

What do you love about bikes?
My favorite thing about bikes is the freedom. Hop on your bike and you can pedal off as far as your legs can carry you. That and the sound of tires rolling through the dirt.”

How many years of wrenching experience do you have?
“The above comment about my previous job being in one hour photo processing should give an indication to how long I’ve been doing this, but to save everyone some research, I started in March of 2001.”
